On December 24, 1989, Alfredo Di Stéfano received one of the most extraordinary honors in football history: the Super Ballon d’Or. France Football recognized the legendary Real Madrid icon after a final vote in which he finished ahead of Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini. To this day, it remains a unique award, making Di Stéfano the only footballer ever to have won it.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen, Di Stéfano was the driving force behind Real Madrid’s first five consecutive European Cups, forging an era that shaped modern football. During his career in white, he also claimed the Ballon d’Or in 1957 and 1959, cementing a legacy that still stands unmatched.
