Today marks 34 years since the passing of one of Real Madrid’s most iconic figures, Juan Gómez Juanito. On April 2, 1992, he tragically lost his life in a car accident while returning to Mérida after attending a match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium against Torino. He was 37 years old at the time and managing Mérida.

Born on November 10, 1954, in Fuengirola (Malaga), Juanito left a lasting legacy during his time at Real Madrid between 1977 and 1987. He made 401 official appearances, scored 121 goals, and won numerous titles, including two UEFA Cup trophies, five La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, one League Cup, and a Pichichi Trophy.

More than three decades after his passing, his memory remains alive among Madridistas. At every match at the Bernabéu, fans honor him in the seventh minute with the chant “Illa, illa, illa, Juanito maravilla.”

Juanito’s legacy goes beyond statistics. His passion, character, and unforgettable moments made him one of the most beloved figures in the club’s history, including his iconic celebrations during the comeback against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup.
