In 2000, FIFA officially named Real Madrid the Best Club of the 20th Century, a historic recognition awarded during a gala held in Rome. Club president Florentino Pérez and honorary president Alfredo Di Stéfano accepted the trophy on behalf of the institution.
Real Madrid dominated the voting with over 42%, well ahead of Manchester United (9.69%) and Bayern Munich (9.18%), who completed the podium. The award highlighted the club’s global impact and the decisive role it played in shaping modern football throughout the century.
By then, the club’s trophy collection already included 8 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 2 Latin Cups, 27 La Liga titles, 17 Copa del Rey trophies, 5 Spanish Super Cups, 1 Copa de la Liga, 1 Copa Iberoamericana, and 2 Small Club World Cups — a record that cemented Real Madrid’s status as the most successful club of the era.
