José Mourinho took a pointed swipe at the latest refereeing controversies ahead of Real Madrid’s game against Elche, leaving the press with a question of his own.
After joking about the endless number of press conferences he has to attend throughout the week, praising Arda Güler and announcing a new MVP award, Mourinho stood up and delivered his barb: "No questions about penalties? That's strange, isn't it?"
The comment was primarily aimed at the media, who are sometimes accused at Valdebebas of turning a blind eye to controversial decisions. However, Mourinho’s remark also appeared to target Barcelona and Atlético, both involved in contentious refereeing incidents over the weekend.
Barcelona faced criticism over the penalty awarded following Lamine Yamal’s fall, while Atlético were involved in another controversial moment when a handball in the area led to the opening goal in their 1-0 defeat at Anoeta.
Mourinho’s question offered a clear indication of the frustration surrounding those incidents inside Real Madrid, with the subject reportedly generating plenty of discussion among club members and the coaching staff.
