Roberto Carlos is widely regarded as one of the greatest left-backs in football history and a true Real Madrid icon.
Even so, Carlos himself believes Marcelo surpassed him.
“Marcelo is the best left-back in Real Madrid’s history,” he said during his appearance on the Obi One podcast.
“Maldini, Ashley Cole, Marcelo or myself? For me, Marcelo is number one. Maldini was top, Ashley Cole was top, I was okay. But Marcelo was different.
“Marcelo had everything. What he did with the ball was unbelievable.
“He could attack, score goals, and dribble. I brought him to Real Madrid and then watched him win Champions Leagues and the Club World Cup. He was extraordinary,” Carlos added.
It is hard to argue with his opinion. Marcelo embodied everything the modern full-back aspires to be.
