Dean Huijsen has been handed a one-match suspension following his controversial red card against Real Sociedad. The Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rejected Real Madrid’s appeal and confirmed the punishment, ruling the center-back out of Saturday’s clash with Espanyol (4:15 p.m. CET).
The decision stands in stark contrast to the public position of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), which acknowledged that Gil Manzano erred by showing a straight red instead of a yellow. At the same time, the CTA defended VAR official Figueroa Vázquez, stating his non-intervention was correct given the “gray” nature of the play.
Real Madrid, however, is not giving up. The club will file a new appeal, using the CTA’s own explanatory video as evidence, where the referee committee itself admitted the sanction should have been limited to a yellow card.
The case adds another layer of controversy to what many—including the refereeing body itself—agree was an unjust dismissal of the young defender.
