Kylian Mbappé has left the French national team camp after experiencing inflammation in his right ankle that requires treatment, as confirmed by the French Football Federation. The Real Madrid forward will undergo medical tests today in Madrid and will miss Sunday’s match against Azerbaijan. Eduardo Camavinga, who is dealing with muscle discomfort, will also return to the Spanish capital this Friday.

Mbappé scored twice in France’s 4-0 win over Ukraine on Thursday, a victory that secured their place in the next World Cup. After the match, he felt pain in his right ankle, and following an initial assessment, the French Federation and the team’s medical staff decided it was best to release him.

France’s upcoming match in Azerbaijan has no impact on the group standings, as Les Bleus have already locked in qualification and first place. With nothing at stake, the Federation deemed it unnecessary to risk Mbappé, even though he is just two goals away from Olivier Giroud’s goal-scoring record. The striker is already on his way to Madrid to begin treatment for the ankle inflammation.
