Zidane: “AI plays a prominent role, but human intelligence is still more important”

14 Oct 2019

Much has been made of the use of technology in LaLiga Santander this year, but Zinedine Zidane doesn’t believe that artificial intelligence (AI) outranks human intelligence.

In the midst of a serious injury crisis within his team, Zidane took the opportunity in the international break to visit Dubai and take part in the Dubai AI in Sports conference.

“AI plays a very important role at the moment, but in my opinion human intelligence remains the most important,” Zidane declared.

“The most important thing that AI has to offer us as coaches is to shorten the time it takes to do some things when training players.

“When I played football, I did everything on the pitch myself, with my skills and my mind, but it has changed a bit now.”

Zidane took on a monumental task in returning to Real Madrid in a difficult moment, but he realizes the challenge he faces moving forward.

“Football is my passion, my life revolves around sport so I don’t like to rest,” he added.

“I enjoy working all the time and when you have a game every three days the last thing you think about is resting.

“I lead a team that is one of the best in the world, which requires me to always be ready.”

With regards to the injury crisis enveloping Los Merengues this term, the French coach was quick to point towards the efforts of the club’s medical staff.

“The preparation of the players is the most important challenge from my point of view,” he said.

“There are 10 people on our medical staff, to try to ensure that our players are always ready to compete.”
