Vinicius impresses on his Bernabeu debut

12 Aug 2018

Replacing Cristiano Ronaldo may well prove to be an impossible task for Real Madrid, yet there are high hopes for Vinicius Junior after he impressed on his Estadio Santiago Bernabeu debut.

After signing for the Spanish giants in the summer of 2017, the former Flamengo prodigy finally got a chance to show his talents to the famous stadium, albeit from the bench.

The match against AC Milan was played at a good tempo, although obviously slower than a competitive fixture, but the minutes on the pitch will help the teenager all the same.

Fans have been excited to see Vinicius Junior arrive ever since the European champions paid 40 million euros to sign a player who had not broken into Flamengo’s senior team at that time.

His performances in Brazil and on the continental stage in the Copa Libertadores have been brilliantly impressive, although nobody can deny that the step up to life with Real Madrid is mammoth.

Those crammed into the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu gave the Brazilian a rousing ovation when he eventually came onto the pitch in the second half, and he immediately settled.

His link-up play with Luka Modric was tidy before the teenager supplied Borja Mayoral with a stunning cross into the penalty area, although the Spaniard’s profligacy would deny Vinicius an assist.

Exciting individual players are always appreciated in the Spanish capital and the Brazilian youth international is just that.

He wanted the ball and fans were on the edge of their seats every time he had it, his dribbling was fast and it kept the Milan defence on their toes.

Florentino Perez hasn’t been as active in the transfer market as he would have liked this summer with none of Eden Hazard, Neymar or Kylian Mbappe arriving at the club.

As such, there is real pressure on Vinicius Junior to produce right away, and whilst the former Porto coach will attempt to shield him from that pressure, if he repeats his performance from Saturday evening on a regular basis then it will be hard to keep him out of the team.
