Vinicius: “I wanted to help vs Manchester City, but I have to respect Zidane’s decisions”

06 Sep 2020

Vinicius Junior has revealed the disappointment he felt at being left out of Real Madrid‘s team to play Manchester City.

Zinedine Zidane started with Eden Hazard and Rodrygo Goes at the Etihad Stadium and didn’t bring Vinicius off the bench during the 2-1 defeat as the Spanish side were eliminated from the Champions League.

“I wanted to go on and help, but I play for the biggest club in the world where there are lots of talented players,” Vinicius told Yellow and Green Football.

“The coach has lots of options going into a match, it’s part of the game.

“It takes time, but we can and we have to understand each selection choice.”

The forward, still only 20, has benefitted from having several experienced teammates at Real Madrid.

“I have lots of support,” Vinicius added.

“We realize that they’re worried about us, the younger players, because we’re the present and the future.

“At my age, only Casillas and Raul have played more games than me and they’re legends here.

“They won lots of trophies and I hope to be able to do the same.

Sergio Ramos and Casemiro are my best role models here.

“I watch them train and I want to do that too.

“Their work ethic pushes me further.”

Despite making such a big move at such a young age, Vinicius has been faced with some criticism during his career.

“Some people don’t even like Neymar,” he pointed out.

“I don’t like thinking about the bad moments of my career.

“Sure, I hope to be able to make all Brazilians like me one day.

“I hope to play for the national team again.

“Many of my idols are there.

Neymar is my inspiration.

“I’ve been working towards a call-up and I hope to make our people happy.

“I want to play at the next World Cup.”
