“As you know, I reached an agreement with Real Madrid and the clubs also reached an agreement but for some reason, all of this was not completed,” Donny van de Beek said in an interview with De Telegraaf.
As per The Athletic, the Whites reached an agreement with Ajax over the midfielder’s transfer in August 2019. The move, however, never materialised as Madrid needed to offload some first-team players to make way for the Dutchman but failed to do so in the final week of the transfer window.
The 23-year-old went on to confirm The Athletic’s story.
“I guess what happened was that there were players who were supposed to leave Madrid but didn’t,” Van de Beek concluded.
The Netherlands international joined Man United for a reported fee of €44m earlier this week. Madrid, in turn, opted to keep Martin Odegaard at the Bernabeu for next season instead of making another bid for Van de Beek this summer.
