Unity, commitment and defence: The keys to Real Madrid’s league leaders

28 Jan 2020

It’s obvious that Real Madrid are going all out for LaLiga Santander.

The jubilant way in which Nacho‘s winner against Real Valladolid was celebrated shows exactly that.

The defender ran over towards the dugout to give Zinedine Zidane a big hug as Los Blancos moved three points clear at the top of the table.

This hug demonstrated the special relationship that Zidane has with his players, especially given that Nacho himself has stayed patient and waited for his chance this season.

Nacho‘s hug with Zidane is the hug from the whole team,” Sergio Ramos said.

“We’re leaders, but we know there’s still a long way to go and that there will be many tough matches.”

The captain has played a key role in Real Madrid‘s title challenge, leading a defence that has conceded just 13 goals in 21 games.

Around him, Thibaut Courtois, Casemiro and Ferland Mendy have also proved to be vital members of the team’s impressive defensive record.

“For us, it’s important to know that, from now on, we’re leading [the table],” Emilio Butragueno said after the win over Valladolid.

“They are three important points. The team is on a great run, it’s solid, it has conviction and we have to take advantage of this moment.

“We came off the back of various good results, with optimum performance and that positive energy that has translated onto the scoreboard.

“The important thing is the team and I agree with Ramos. The team is very united, they help each other and they’re all aware of their jobs.

“The objective is winning and it doesn’t matter who scores.”
