There are only so many ways to go down in history and Gareth Bale found perhaps the perfect way in Saturday’s Champions League final with an eerily familiar overhead kick.

Some 53 days previous, Cristiano Ronaldo had produced very much the same effort in the quarter-finals and the pair of wonder goals will likely define this trophy victory for decades to come.

In Kiev it was a left-footed effort to the goalkeeper’s right after the cross came in from the left; in Turin it was a right-footed effort to the goalkeeper’s left after the cross came in from the right. Both produced the same result: a legendary strike that nestled in the top corner.
