Santos have asked Real Madrid if they can extend young striker Rodrygo‘s loan until the end of 2019.

Their request comes after they agreed a fee with Los Blancos back in June 2018 for the player to join up with his new club in the summer of 2019.

“We have already put it to Real Madrid, we have sent our offer and we are awaiting a response,” Santos president Jose Carlos Peres said this Sunday on TV Gazeta’s programme ‘Round Table’.

“It is too soon to speak, but we did it as a precaution.”

Rodrygo, who celebrated his 18th birthday on January 9, was signed by the Spanish giants last summer for a whopping 45 million euros.

At the time, the young Brazilian was only 17 years old, which is why it was agreed that he would remain at Santos until this July, just like his fellow compatriot Vinicius Jr. did when he signed from Flamengo.

Santo‘s new boss, Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, said last December that he thought it would be a good idea for the player to stay at the club for a few more years to aid his development.

“I think that for the good of his career, it would be a beneficial both for me and for him to carry on playing for us for several more years, but the decision is out of my hands,” the former Argentina and Chile coach said.

The striker is yet to meet up with his new boss as he is currently on international duty with the Brazilian under 20 side, who are playing at the South American U-20 Championship in Chile, which starts this Thursday and will finish on February 10.

Before receiving his call-up to the national team, Rodrygo travelled to Spain to finalize his move to the club and to become familiar with the training ground and its facilities.

He was also present at the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
