Real Madrid are unstoppable in finals

07 Aug 2017

For Zinedine Zidane and his Real Madrid squad, the 2017/18 season will get underway with a final, but this shouldn’t be a major concern for a team that thrives when everything is on the line.

Since losing the Copa del Rey decider against Atletico Madrid at the end of the 2012/13 season, Los Blancos have lifted a trophy at the end of their subsequent eight finals.

On Tuesday, they’ll take on Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup, a competition they also claimed following their 2014 and 2016 Champions League victories, defeating Sevilla both times.

Of course, by reaching these Super Cup dates Real Madrid have had to win the Champions League first and they have done so in each of their three trips to the final since that Copa del Rey loss in 2013, getting revenge on Atletico twice and seeing off Juventus in Cardiff earlier this year.

That, then, accounts for five of their final wins over the past four years, with two Club World Cup successes and the 2013/14 Copa del Rey taking the total up to eight.

The only time Real Madrid have lost at the final hurdle was in the 2014 Spanish Super Cup, but it should be remembered that this was a two-legged final.

When everything must be decided on that night, that’s when the capital city club are at their most ruthless.
