While Kylian Mbappé has reportedly told his team mates in the PSG dressing room that he has decided to stay at PSG to see out the last year of his contract, Real Madrid is not throwing in the towel in its attempt to sign him before the close of the transfer window on 31 August.
Proof that Madrid is not giving up with this strategic signing came before yesterday when it went out of its way to make it clear that it did not plan to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, not even as a Plan B — to the point of involving coach Carlo Ancelotti, who posted a personal tweet ruling out that possibility.
The reason is that the president and the board of directors understood that flirting with the idea of signing Cristiano would convey that it considered Mbappé a lost cause, which does not correspond to reality under any circumstances. Madrid will try until the end.
Many PSG fans open to Mbappé’s exit
Indeed, Mbappé is hurt not only by those whistles from the PSG fans (many of them came from the section of the ultras, who have a large share of control at the the Parisian club), but the next day PSG posted a video on its social media channels of Mbappé coming out of the tunnel and listening to the whistling in the background.
PSG fans are open to the sale of Mbappé following the signing of Lionel Messi, who has now taken center-stage at Parc des Princes. In fact, in the poster created by the club for the stadium tour, Messi is in the center of the picture and Mbappé appears to one side and behind the Argentine. A survey by El Chiringuito outside the PSG stadium showed that there are many fans who would prefer that Mbappé leaves now to generate funds for the club’s coffers rather than the club letting him go for free next year.
“Mbappé will be a Madrid player”
Madrid remains calm because they know that the player’s will is unwavering and that his decision to arrive at Madrid, now or in 2022, is firm and final.
“Even if they don’t let him leave now, in a year he will be a Madrid player. He decided not to renew his contract and he is a kid with clear ideas and a very clever head. If it were for money he would have signed a long time ago,” club sources said.
Let’s not forget that PSG has offered him up to €40 million net per season (only Messi would earn more with €60 million, but his salary would exceed that of Neymar at €37 million) and at Madrid he would never come close to earning that amount.
Mbappé wants to become the leader of Madrid’s next project and not the third man on PSG’s superstar podium. His family has been looking for a house in Madrid for weeks in the wealthy La Moraleja neighbourhood.
Madrid has money in the coffers right now to pay for Mbappé now if necessary, although up to this point PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi has argued that they will not sit down to negotiate since that would mean that they assume that Mbappé is for sale. Between now and 31 August things could still happen and Madrid will remain alert.
