Real Madrid lose Champions League opener for first time since 2005

19 Sep 2019

Real Madrid have lost their Champions League opener for the first time in 14 years.

Los Blancos were beaten 3-0 by Paris Saint-Germain thanks to a double from Angel Di Maria and a strike from Thomas Meunier.

The last time Real Madrid lost their first game of a Champions League campaign was also in France and also by a 3-0 scoreline.

Goals from John Carew, Juninho and Sylvain Wiltord saw Lyon come out on top at the Stade Gerland during the 2005/06 season.

Vanderlai Luxemburgo’s side managed to reach the knockout stages that year before falling to Arsenal in the last 16.

This defeat to PSG is just Zinedine Zidane‘s fifth as a coach in the Champions League and just his second in the group stages.

Only two of the 64 European champions lost their opening match of their continental campaign.
