Real Madrid were left furious after their draw with Sevilla at Valdebebas on Sunday night and feeling a strong sense of amazement with what happened in the 74th minute.
A Sevilla corner ended up hitting Eder Militao‘s arm. As the referee didn’t see the handball, play continued. Real Madrid broke and, at the other end, Karim Benzema was awarded a penalty. But VAR intervened and, as the handball had happened first, a penalty was given, but to Sevilla.
“Theft, a huge scandal, an injustice,” were some of the shouts heard from Real Madrid‘s higher-ups at Valdebebas. Dani Carvajal even posted – and then deleted – an angry Instagram story.
Real Madrid believe that they are the victims of inconsistent refereeing decisions. For example, they have pointed to Felipe‘s handball in the Madrid derby, for which they weren’t given a penalty. They are adamant that the treatment they receive is different to the other clubs around them.
Suspicion has grown in recent weeks at the club, and they have started to feel as though winning LaLiga Santander won’t be made easy for them.
“What a shame,” wrote Dani Carvajal on Instagram when the penalty was awarded in Sevilla‘s favour, and his sentiments are echoed by a lot of people at the club.
