Real Madrid are back

03 Dec 2019

The other day I read that, at last, Real Madrid had played very well. And it is true that, over the last year and a half or so, if Los Blancos have played well it has been in isolated and open games, winning simply because they have players that are usually far superior to the opposition.

It should not be newsworthy that a team containing Thibaut CourtoisSergio RamosMarceloToni KroosGareth BaleKarim BenzemaIsco or Casemiro has been able to string together four good performances in a row, but that is the case: Real Madrid are back.

And the culprit of it all, and it’s fair to admit it that way, is none other than Zinedine Zidane. I don’t know how Zizou overnight left a package bomb on the president’s table. As stunning as I found his departure, upon his return as head coach, Real Madrid played worse with him than they had under Julen Lopetegui or Santiago Solari.

He then promised changes that didn’t occur and, upon completing his line-up, we realized that nine of the starters were still present from his first spell in charge. But, with his magical touch, Zidane has been able to get these players to rediscover their best form, with Isco being one of the latest beneficiaries as he looked like a shadow of his former self prior to his last two performances.

As Marcelo said, the league titles are effectively won at grounds like Eibar‘s Ipurua and Alaves‘ Estadio de Mendizorroza. It seems that Zidane is determined for Real Madrid to start taking LaLiga Santander seriously again, with the week-to-week focus that it brings, and it’s true that, newsworthy or not, this team is quite reminiscent of the one that won LaLiga Santander and the Champions League in the same season.
