Nacho Fernandez has cited Zinedine Zidane as the reason for his turnaround in fortunes at Real Madrid this year.
The defender was on the brink of leaving the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu last season, but has become a regular fixture in defence in the current campaign.
“Staying here was the best decision,” he told Dtlux. “I am where I want to be and I’m playing a lot, which is important.”
“I stayed because of the confidence that the manager and the club had in me.”
The 27-year-old is looking to emulate a long list of big names to have played in his position at the club, with Hierro, Cannavaro and Ramos the people he’s always looked up to.
When his playing career finishes, Nacho has big plans for the future.
“I would like to be a manager,” he said. “To be involved in football or in any other sport.”
In the more short term, however, it is the World Cup next summer that Nacho is focused on.
“To be in Lopetegui’s plans is one of my objectives, but there is still a lot to do before then,” he added.
