Mourinho: “The saddest moment of my career was being knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich”

Reflecting on his career, Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho has highlighted elimination to Bayern Munich while with Real Madrid as the lowest point of his career.

The penalty shoot-out defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu sent his team out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.

“If I have to choose the worst moment, it’s that elimination with Real Madrid,” Mourinho responded in an interview with Mercado Aberto for Portuguese television channel Sic.

“We were the best team in Europe, without a doubt, we won LaLiga smashing all the records for points and goals and we would’ve won that final, I don’t have any doubt.

“What was most cruel for me was that in the shoot-out we chose Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos, they were dead certs from the penalty spot and the guys who missed were those who never miss, it sunk me.”

Mourinho would last just 12 months more in the dugout at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu before returning to his former club Chelsea.
