Real Madrid needed to dig themselves out of a hole once again in LaLiga this weekend, with a late strike from Marcelo required to overcome Valencia and win 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu to keep themselves on track in the title race.
The Brazil international cut in from the left to fire home the game-defining goal, after Dani Parejo cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half header with a fantastic free-kick.
“I am happy to have picked up three difficult points,” Marcelo explained to repoters post-match.
“A lot of people who come to the Bernabeu want to annoy us, it is normal that they want to beat Real Madrid. Today we showed heart and who we are.
“With the fans with us, it is difficult to beat us here.
“Everyone fought until the end and we had achieved the three points. I am happy with the goal, but more so to have won the points.
“We continue now and we are going to fight until the end.”
Dani Parejo’s free-kick had almost made things extremely tight in the title race, but Marcelo knows that more effort will be required to get over the line come the end of the campaign.
“If we want to win, we have to win everything we have left with patience and a lot of work,” he said.
