Marcelo set to stay at Real Madrid next season

08 May 2019

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo may have underperformed this season, but Zinedine Zidane wants him to stay at the club for the next campaign.

The Frenchman considers the Brazilian, who arrived at Real Madrid in 2006 at the age of 18, as one of the team’s most valuable assets.

Both the club’s and the player’s intention is for Marcelo to be part of the squad in 2019/20 despite alleged interest from Juventus.

Regardless of the player’s below-par performances this season, Zidane re-introduced him to the starting line-up upon his comeback to Los Blancos.

Under Santiago SolariMarcelo reached the lowest point in his Real Madrid career, as he was dropped to the bench and was barely used as a substitute.

Sergio Reguilon replaced him at left-back as he featured in most of the important games, leaving the Brazil international with spare appearances in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid‘s plan is to get him out of his comfort zone, as he hasn’t faced enough competition in his position in the last few years.

Lyon‘s Ferland Mendy has attracted Zidane‘s interest and, despite Reguilon‘s adequate performances this campaign, the youngster may leave on loan this summer.

Meanwhile, Marcelo, whose performances have improved in recent games, will face the challenge of trying to beat Roberto Carlos‘ record as the foreign player with the most games in the history of the club.
