Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Luka Jovic, who had previously turned down Barcelona‘s interest in order to join Los Blancos.
The Serbian had been on the Blaugrana‘s radar for several months, but he decided to move Zinedine Zidane‘s team this summer, as happened with Vinicius Junior one year ago after he rejected the Catalan side.
Here are 10 players who rejected Barcelona in order to sign for their Madrid-based rivals:
1.Alfredo di Stefano
A deal was sealed between the Argentine forward and Barcelona, but Madrid took advantage of a strange disappearance of his documentation to sign him. FIFA decided that the forward could play one season in each team until the end of his contract, but Barcelona rejected the proposal. Di Stefano went on to win five European Cups in a row with Los Blancos.
2. Hugo Sanchez
The Mexican striker came close to signing for Barcelona, but after negotiations broke down he renewed with Real Madrid, who signed him from Atletico Madrid several years before.
3. Christian Karembeu
Barcelona offered him more money to move to Catalonia, but the Frenchman decided to sign for Real Madrid, where he stayed for three seasons and won three Champions League trophies.
4. David Beckham
Joan Laporta won Barcelona’s presidency elections by promising to sign the Englishman, who instead moved to Real Madrid, despite the Blaugrana‘s agreement with Manchester United. The Catalans signed Ronaldinho and their fans quickly forgot about Beckham.
5. Karim Benzema
Pep Guardiola was eager to replace Samuel Eto’o with Benzema back in 2008, when the Frenchman showed glimpses of his talent at Lyon. Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain visited Benzema at his house to try and convince him to move to the Catalan side, but the striker turned down their offer and Barcelona signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Benzema moved to Madrid the following season.
6. Martin Odegaard
Odegaard even visited Barcelona‘s training facilities in November 2014, accompanied by his father and his agent. Negotiations broke down, however, and the Norwegian ended up at Los Blancos.
In February 2015, Barcelona approached Porto about signing the Brazilian in the following transfer window due to a transfer ban imposed on them by UEFA. The current Manchester City right-back instead opted for Real Madrid, where he played 56 games between 2015 and 2017.
8. Theo Hernandez
Los Blancos and Atletico Madrid reached an agreement for the left-back’s signing in July 2017, but Barcelona tried to snatch the player. The Catalan giants offer him a salary of eight million per year, but Theo picked Real Madrid as his next team.
9. Dani Ceballos
Barcelona and Ceballos were negotiating his move to the Blaugrana, who wanted to loan him back to Real Betis for another season before moving to his new club. The Spaniard turned down their offer and informed Betis that he was eager to sign for Real Madrid.
10. Marco Asensio
His move to Barcelona was almost clinched, but negotiations broke down with Real Mallorca as the Blaugrana were not willing to make a one-off payment of 4.5 million euros to acquire the player’s services. Real Madrid were quick to offer Mallorca what they wanted and subsequently signed Asensio.
