If Sarabia, Di Maria and Icardi are hurting Real Madrid…

One year ago, Real Madrid were comfortable winners over Roma in their Champions League opener. It was a similar story in Paris where one team, Paris Saint-Germain this time, dominated while their opponents lacked any sort of cutting edge. Zinedine Zidane‘s men didn’t manage a single shot on target.

A lot was expected of Real Madrid on their first European outing of the season, only for it to end in total disappointment. They went out of last season’s Champions League with a whimper and they’ve started this campaign in the same way. They were completely inferior to a PSG side who were without Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani.

Real Madrid look like they’ve hit rock bottom. The humbling at the hands of Ajax and now this defeat to PSG serve to remind how much work is needed to be done at the club. The ease with which PSG were able to test Thibaut Courtois doesn’t say much for the defence work that Zidane‘s side are currently doing.

PSG looked like scoring with every attack. The French champions were intense, quick, hungry and played good football. They controlled the game not because of their own superiority, but by the lack of competition provided by their opponents.

Pablo Sarabia, Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi didn’t do anything particularly special, with their simple but effective movements tearing the Real Madrid defense apart. The visitors didn’t compete in midfield either as Thomas Tuchel‘s men battled for every ball.

Little has changed since the loss to Ajax in March and Real Madrid came up against a team with such high intensity, they’re always going to come off worse.
