On the 11th of December 2000, Real Madrid were chosen by FIFA as the Best Club of the 20th Century. The award was presented at a gala in Roma with Alfredo Di Stéfano and Florentino Pérez there to accept the trophy. Real Madrid won thanks to more than 42% of the votes. They were followed by Manchester United and Bayern Munich, who finished below them with 9.69% and 9.18% of the votes respectively.
The award was recognition for Real Madrid’s phenomenal rise and its importance in the development of football worldwide. At the time the title was awarded, the Whites’ trophy cabinet already boasted eight European Cups, two UEFA Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, two Latin Cups, 27 League titles, 17 Copa del Rey trophies, five Spanish Super Cups and one League Cup.
