Champions League glory for Real Madrid would be enough to salvage their season, according to star striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
Los Blancos are currently floundering for form, languishing 19 points behind Barcelona in LaLiga and having crashed out of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night.
That makes retaining their Champions League crown a big priority for Ronaldo and his teammates, although he insisted that they cannot relinquish their league championship so early.
“If we can win the Champions League at the end of the year, it will be an incredible year,” he told Chinese outlet Doonqiudi at Valdebebas, having granted them an interview after being voted their Footballer of the Year for the third year in a row.
“We haven’t started well in LaLiga and we are disappointed, nobody is happy about that.
“But now we must work hard for the Champions League because it’s the most important trophy for us.
“It will be difficult in LaLiga, but we can’t give up, even if we have dropped many points since the start of the season.
“We have to keep working.”
His latest individual honour from Doonqiudi comes on the back of yet another Ballon d’Or award for the Portugal ace, who revealed that those successes are not what keeps driving him.
“I’m not obsessed with that because I didn’t even expect to win the five that I have won,” Ronaldo added.
“It is good, though, and between myself and Messi, we have shared the Ballon d’Or for the last 10 years.”
