Courtois challenges Oblak for the Zamora Trophy

16 Jan 2020

Thibaut Courtois departed Atletico Madrid in 2014 with two Zamora Trophies in his suitcase, while this season he is competing with Jan Oblak for the award.

The Zamora Trophy is given to the LaLiga Santander goalkeeper who has kept the most clean sheets after playing a minimum of 28 games, during which they must have played at least 60 minutes of those matches.

Upon Courtois‘ return to Spain last season, the Belgian shot-stopper struggled to rediscover his form and conceded as many as 36 goals in 27 games.

However, in the ongoing campaign Courtois, has been solid between the sticks and that has seen him challenge Oblak, who has won the Zamora Trophy for the last four seasons.

Three goals in 12 games

The Belgium international has conceded nine goals in 16 games in 2019/20, but six of them came in first four league games.

Thus, Courtois has allowed just three goals in his last 12 matches, with his overall average being 0.56 goals conceded per game.

Meanwhile, Oblak has registered an average of 0.63 after having collected the ball out the back of his net 12 times in 19 games.

Courtois‘ was criticized for his performances in the first stretch of the season, but he has managed to recover his form, with this coinciding with Real Madrid‘s improved solidity at the back in the last couple of months.
