Zinedine Zidane has asked Real Madrid to sign Matthijs de Ligt this summer after it became clear Raphael Varane wants to leave. According to Italian newspaper ‘Corriere dello Sport’, Zidane sees the Dutch youngster as the ideal man to replace Varane and hopes to secure his signature ahead of Barcelona.
De Ligt seems certain to follow Frenkie de Jong out of Ajax this summer but Zidane refuses to give up hope of convincing the defender that Madrid would be the best option for him. Barça remain confident they can bring in de Ligt alongside de Jong.
It does however appear that Real Madrid is joining the race for the 19-year-old defender too late.
The only way De Ligt could end up joining the Spanish team would be if De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola, known to be quite unpredictable, changes his mind.
