Casemiro: Real Madrid’s unsung hero

30 Jun 2020

The spotlight is on Karim Benzema for his backheel assist, but it was Casemiro whose name went on the scoresheet and sent Real Madrid to the top of LaLiga Santander.

It was Casemiro‘s fourth goal of the 2019/20 season, and the Brazilian midfielder has shown time and time again that when Real Madrid need him, he is there.

Every time Casemiro has scored in 2019/20, Real Madrid have won points – nine to be exact. Nine points that are crucial when LaLiga Santander is as tight as it is.

Casemiro‘s first goal of 2019/20 came on the first weekend when Real Madrid beat Levante 3-2. In this instance, everybody was focusing on Eden Hazard, who was making his debut, but it was Casemiro that got the third goal.

On January 18, it was Sevilla who suffered at the hands of Casemiro, as he scored a double against Los Nervionenses. The 28-year-old, whose primary concern is to sit back and defend, turned up with the goals when his side needed them.

He is one of the most complete players in Zinedine Zidane‘s squad; he can do everything and he does it well. He scores, gets points, regains possession and wins more headers than most other midfielders. At the moment, he is irreplaceable.

Zidane is aware of Casemiro‘s importance, which is why if he always plays when he is available. In fact, in 2019/20, Casemiro didn’t get a break until matchday 17.

When he doesn’t play it becomes a recurring topic in Zidane‘s press conferences, because everyone knows Real Madrid are a weaker team without Casemiro.

In the important battles, Casemiro shows up when his side needs him most, as he demonstrated against Juventus in the final of the 2017 Champions League, against Napoli and now against Espanyol in LaLiga Santander.
