Can Mbappe, Haaland, Benzema and Vinicius play together?

04 Jan 2022

2022 is the designated year for Real Madrid. It is the year in which everything comes together to start a project to dominate the football world again. The new Santiago Bernabéu will be the main attraction, but for everything to be round, big signings are being prepared. Two names appear in the minds of Madridistas: Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.

The double signing would come as a shock to world football, and Carlo Ancelotti would have to find a way to make it work but without forgetting Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, who are firing on all cylinders this season.

All four would fit on Carlo Ancelotti’s slate, although it is clear that changes would have to be made from his traditional 4-3-3.

These would be the options of the starting lineups of Real Madrid with Mbappé and Haaland:

The 4-3-3 is impossible to work with the four above. It would destabilize the team, so the most normal thing is that this scheme would only be used when Benzema is not there.

To begin to see the four together, the 4-4-2 is one of the possibilities although not the one that convinces the most. Someone would have to give up from the center of the field (Casemiro for example) and double efforts will be needed from the rest when defending. There would be four behind, but perhaps the center of the field would be too deliberate affecting the time of creating game and retreating.

And from 4-4-2 to a very similar variant, the 4-2-3-1. This already does convince something else since Benzema would stay behind Haaland and would play a more play-creating role. That would allow for a player with a more defensive profile in the center of the field to play such as Casemiro, Fede Valverde or Camavinga and would give the wingers (Carvajal and Mendy) more lane to run.

Three defenders, three in the middle of the field and four above to exploit a dizzying style in which the ball runs fast and is hit hard in the opponent’s area. Rather than playing with two wingers (Haaland and Benzema), the most likely thing is that Karim got behind the Norwegian and connected more with Vini, always on the left, and Mbappé, on the right. The center of the field would be covered and the back line may consist 0f Militao, Alaba and Mendy.
