Benzema-Vinicius: A historical duo

13 Nov 2021

There have been many iconic and legendary forwards who have played a part in Real Madrid’s illustrious history and as a partnership, Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior have a record that compares favourably to any other in recent decades.

Benzema is thriving with the greater responsibility given to him in Los Blancos’ attack since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, while Vini Jr has taken a big leap this season and is looking like a real star, instead of merely a raw talent. Together, their importance to the team cannot be overstated.

In fact, between them, the attacking duo have scored 62.16 percent of all Real Madrid’s goals this season. Call it dependence, call it a hot streak of form, what’s certain is that Benzema and Vinicius are huge players and showing their worth in 2021/22.

Their numbers so far this campaign make them the most dominant pairing within a Real Madrid team since 1945/46 when Pruden and Sabino Barinaga bagged 62.86 percent of the goals.

Seventy four years later

Some 74 years later and with the Bernabeu once again under construction work, Real Madrid’s current stars are threatening a record which has stood the test of time.

When Ronaldo left, few would have expected that Benzema and Vinicius would have stepped up like this. Benzema was excellent foil for the Portuguese attacker, while the Brazilian was a prospect, a work in progress.

Step up they have, however, and their combined 23 goals by early November is no mean feat by any standards.

Looking again at the percentages, their form puts them ahead of some legendary partnerships, including Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas (57.48 percent in 1960/61), Davor Suker and Raul (53.13 percent in 1996/97) and Raul and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (49.45 percent in 2006/07).

It remains to be seen how that percentage will be looking at the end of the season for Benzema and Vini Jr, but we can be sure that they will have a big say in any success the club has this season.
