Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was tasked with arguably one of the most difficult feats in world football – living up to Cristiano Ronaldo‘s standards.
As things stand, he is certainly living up to expectations.
Ronaldo left Madrid in 2018 to sign for Juventus and without a like-for-like replacement, Benzema has been left to fill the Portuguese star’s boots.
The Frenchman, who has now scored in his last three games, is leading the way for Real Madrid to ensure that they do not fail in their pursuit of the Champions League.
He currently has as many goals to his name as Ronaldo has for Juventus, both having scored 17 times.
If we look back at the stats from last season, it is clear to see who has dramatically improved their goal-scoring form.
This time last season, Ronaldo had notched up 20 goals with Benzema only finding the back of the net on six occasions.
This year is a completely different story in which they have both scored the same amount of goals.
Benzema‘s 17 strikes so far this season have all come from inside the box.
He was often accused of playing well for his time but failing to convert his chances into goals like Ronaldo did.
He got a brace against both Cornella and Girona, respectively and in the process leapfrogged Hugo Sanchez to become the sixth highest goal-scorer of all time for Real Madrid with 209 goals.
Only Lionel Messi, who has 27 goals to his name, has managed to score more times this season than Benzema. Wissam Ben Yedder, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann are all behind him on 16 goals apiece.
