The names of David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois have become intrinsically linked with Real Madrid in recent transfer windows but now it appears that Alisson Becker has jumped both of these goalkeepers in the club’s shortlist.
For some time now there has been a desire in the Madrid club’s hierarchy to replace Keylor Navas and yet deals for De Gea and Athletic Club’s Kepa Arrizabalaga have fallen through or been blocked by coach Zinedine Zidane.
However, the economic picture for Alisson is a lot clearer than other top keepers.
25-year-old Alisson would likely require only half the salary of De Gea or Courtois and Roma are thought to be willing to do a deal at around 50m euros to 60m euros.
As he arrived for just 7.5m euros from Internacional in 2016, that would represent a big profit for the Italians as they want to top the 51m euros that Manchester City paid for Ederson, the man behind Allison in the Brazil pecking order, last summer.
Los Blancos were first offered the chance to bid for the Brazilian a few weeks ago, and it was a proposal which they looked at cautiously.
Since then, his performances in the Champions League have continued to be impressive with Roma now drawn against Barcelona in the quarter-finals having disposed with Atletico Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.
Competition is likely to arrive from Liverpool but Alisson has already gone on record to admit his predilection for Real Madrid.
“Those links massage the ego, it cannot be denied,” he recently confessed to Globoesporte.
“People get satisfaction from recognition. I feel very happy to have that recognition. It means that I am doing my job well, that they are watching me. Even more so when one hears about Real Madrid.”
The Keylor Conundrum
History suggests that Zidane will maintain his preference for Keylor Navas throughout the coming window and thus the Costa Rican’s future is strongly linked with that of his coach.
Whether Zidane remains in place or not, however, those at the top of the club are determined to seal a new goalkeeper and now have a new preference themselves.
The potential arrival of Karlo Letica from Hajduk Split is considered separate from this deal, as the Croatian is very much one for the future and there is still to be plenty of decision making before anything becomes a reality in that regard.
What has been decided is that Madrid are keeping their options open, working on multiple fronts, and very interested in Alisson.
